Description

The Music Hall mmf-5.3se vinyl turntable is an upgrade of the American brand’s second model. While it has retained most of the original model’s technical features, it also boasts a higher end cartridge, the Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge, and a new rosenut finish.

The body is made from two lacquered plinths isolated from one another by 6 TPE-damped cones. Before use, you'll need to remove the three screws to separate the plinths. Once these have been removed, you’ll be able to clearly see that there is no mechanical connection between the plinths and that the mechanical parts are completely isolated from the frame. The frame sits on three feet designed by Music Hall itself, and could be described as shortened upside-down pyramids that sandwich a vibration isolation bushing. This design is both aesthetically striking and technically effective.

The turntable's synchronous motor is attached to the lower plinth, which prevents vibrations from travelling to the top plinth and therefore to the tonearm. It uses an external 15V DC power supply. It also has a dedicated circuit for a 16V alternating current. The drive pulley has two grooves which enable you to change the speed manually (between 33⅓ and 45 rpm) by moving the belt. The sub-platter bearing is made of bronze and spindle is made of stainless steel, and the whole mechanism has been meticulously milled and lubricated to prevent any unwanted friction. The sub-platter is made of highly durable PVC in order to limit vibration as much as possible. The platter is made of die-cast aluminium, and this density and weight gives it excellent inertia. It’s topped by a traditional felt platter mat, which is simple and effective, although we tend to prefer leather platter mats. Its threaded spindle can accommodate a record clamp (included). The tonearm consists of a 9-inch carbon fibre tube and aluminium headshell. It has been assembled with meticulous precision, and the combination of its weight, rigidity and length ensure excellent tracking. The phono cable is removable, which is highly advantageous for future upgrades.

Setting up the Music Hall mmf-5.3se couldn’t be easier – especially when you order from maPlatine.com, as we deliver it to your door fully assembled and set up! This means that when it arrives all that’s left to do is set up the platter and position the small antiskating weight on the second notch. For best results we recommend placing it on a perfectly level surface, which is easily done with the handy spirit level that is built in to the upper plinth – pretty clever!

And we have to say that, within seconds of listening, we were very impressed by the timbre and depth of the Music Hall mmf-5.3se. This is a far cry from digital reproduction. The bass is full-bodied and articulated, without any roll-off. The midrange isn't relegated to the background, unlike some vinyl turntables in this price range. In actual fact, it is present and highly detailed. The top end of the spectrum is also defined and precise, without a hint of aggressiveness. The record clamp supplied with the turntable improves the placement of the instruments and increases precision in the bass.

This Music Hall turntable has been a real revelation – now we understand why it’s so popular across the pond! The Music Hall mmf-5.3se vinyl turntable has many technical advantages over its competitors, delivering a sound quality that makes it one of the best options out there. Highly recommended.
