Description

The Music Hall mmf-5.3 vinyl turntable is the replacement for the company’s 5.1 model and is the third model in the manufacturer’s current range. While it has retained some of the innovative features of its predecessor, it has also undergone several technical improvements that have consolidated its status as a serious competitor to any vinyl turntable by Rega or Pro-Ject.

For example, it boasts Music Hall’s signature dual plinth. This consists of two lacquered plinths, isolated from one another by 6 TPE-damped cones. Before use, you'll need to remove three screws to separate the plinths. Once these have been removed, you’ll be able to clearly see that there is no mechanical connection between the plinths and the mechanical parts. These are perfectly decoupled from the mount and do not interact or receive vibrations.

The whole plinth ensemble sits on three feet specially designed by Music Hall. These feet could be described as shortened upside-down pyramids that sandwich a TPE vibration isolation bushing. They are also adjustable to ensure that your vinyl turntable remains perfectly level. The turntable's synchronous motor is attached to the lower plinth, which prevents vibrations from travelling to the top plinth and therefore to the tonearm. It is driven by a DC/AC circuit board. In essence, this means that an outboard power supply delivers a direct current, similar to that of a battery, to this circuit board. The circuit board then converts this into an alternating current with a perfectly stable frequency. This technology gives the drive remarkable linearity. The drive pulley has two grooves which enable you to change the speed manually (between 33⅓ and 45 rpm) by moving the belt. The sub-platter bearing is made of bronze and the spindle is made of stainless steel. The bottom of the housing is sheathed in Teflon. This whole mechanism has been meticulously milled and lubricated to prevent any unwanted friction. The sub-platter is made of highly durable PVC in order to limit vibration as much as possible. The platter is made of die-cast aluminium, giving it impressive mass and impeccable inertia. It is topped, as standard, by a felt platter mat.

The Music Hall mmf-5.3 vinyl turntable also comes delivered with a screw-on record clamp that can be attached to the platter’s main bearing. It’s simple but extremely effective! The new tonearm is a 9-inch model with a carbon fibre tube and an aluminium headshell, which appears to be a hybrid version of the 9CC tonearm by Pro-Ject. Its bearings have been assembled with meticulous precision, and its weight and rigidity combined with its length mean that it delivers excellent tracking. The tracking force, azimuth and VTA are all fully adjustable. This turntable’s phono cable is detachable, which means you can easily upgrade to a higher quality model such as the Pro-Ject Connect It or Supra Biline Phono. It comes as standard with a translucent dust cover as well as the excellent Ortofon 2M Blue MM cartridge.

It couldn’t be easier or quicker to get the Music Hall mmf-5.3 up and running. We’ve done a lot of the work for you, so when it arrives all that’s left to do is set up the platter and position the small antiskating weight on the second notch. We highly recommend that you place the turntable on a perfectly level surface. And the spirit level built into the top plinth is the perfect way to do this!

Within the first few minutes of listening, the personality of this turntable shines through. It is completely consistent with Roy Hall's original vision. It has all of the dynamic range and transparency of earlier models, but the definition and precision it delivers is significantly more advanced, The placement of each musician is also far superior to the mmf-5.1 model. It has all of Music Hall’s characteristic timbre quality, and delivers more substance and presence than its rivals. It tends to prioritise timbre over excessive definition. The high quality of the tonearm allows for upgrades to the MM cartridge, or, even better, to an MC cartridge. Which is not to say that the Ortofon 2M Blue doesn’t deliver excellent results, because it does!

The Music Hall mmf-5.3 vinyl turntable is an excellent record player which has won us over with its even, cohesive and analogue sound quality. Highly recommended for lovers of that distinctive vinyl sound!

Superbe !
