The new Principia line of Sonus Faber, the Italian manufacturer, includes five bookshelf speakers and tower models. The Principia 5 is the least expensive tower speaker ever offered by the Italian manufacturer.
SONUS FABER PRINCIPIA 5: DESIGN
The Principia 5 is an elegant tower speaker, very close to its big sister, the Sonus Faber Chameleon T.
The main aesthetic difference is that it does not offer interchangeable flanks.
The fabric cover is magnetically attached to the front, leaving no trace of attachment once it is removed.
Sonus Faber's touch of Italian design is a pleasure.
SONUS FABER PRINCIPIA 5: SPEAKERS
The speakers are surrounded by an outstanding brushed aluminum ring.
The high frequencies are entrusted by a tweeter with a DKM type silk dome of 29 mm.
The mid is transcribed by a 15 cm speaker with an aluminium membrane. It is relayed in the bass thanks to a 15 cm speaker with an aluminium membrane. This one is placed in a chamber separated from the bass/reflex system.
The port opens at the front base of the Principia 5 tower speaker.
SONUS FABER PRINCIPIA 5: SETTING UP AND CONNECTION
Regarding to the setting up of this Sonus Faber Principia 5, all the cabinet rests on a base equipped with decoupling points.
The double terminal block is compatible with banana plugs, forks or bare wire with a cross-section of 2.5mm².
SONUS FABER PRINCIPIA 5: TEST AND LISTENING
The Principia 5 tower speakers offer an upper mid reproduction close to its little sister, the Sonus Faber Principia 3 bookshelf speaker. But as we could expect, the excursion in the bass and its impact are much more convincing. The sound stage is impacted in the good sense of the word. We find the fullness and the depth of the tower speakers.
The midrange is present and very realistic. In terms of timbre, the manufacturer has evolved in recent years. Sonus Faber was criticized because of the top end of its spectrum that lacked of definition and was slightly ascending. It is not the case of the Principia 5 that offers an excellent definition and mid-woofer clarity.
The sub basses are rendered with a lot of realism and articulation. With a small and a slightly “strong” amplifier, we do not feel any frustration, no matter the music style you are listening to.
These Sonus Faber Principia 5 tower speakers offer a real musicality and an outstanding sound aesthetics while keeping all the DNA of the manufacturer at a very attractive price!
