Pro-Ject Head Box S headphone amplifier

The Pro-Ject Head Box S headphone amplifier is replaced by the Pro-Ject Head Box S2 headphone amplifier.

With this small box you can listen with headphones or an amplifier or preamplifier that has no dedicated output. All you need to do is connect it to your system's 'monitor out' or 'Tape out' output. Naturally it can be connected directly to a phono preamplifier for those of you who only listen to vinyl records with headphones. This Head Box S is the replacement of the famous Head Box 2. Though they are very similar, the signal-to-noise ratio has increased from 78 to 95 dB and the distortion has decreased from 0.007 to 0.003%. Like its predecessor, it is beautifully crafted. The electronics, consisting of low-noise semi-conductors, are housed in a non-magnetic metal casing with a brushed aluminium natural or black front panel. In the middle, it is adorned with a rotary button that controls the output volume (headphones) and a 6.33 mm stereo female connector. At the back there are two pairs of gold-plated RCA connectors, one input and one output for connection between an preamplifier and an amplifier. The Head Box S is clearly designed to supply entry-level to midrange headphones. We played it with a Grado SR60i and a Sennheiser HD 558. The result is very convincing and even quite unexpected. The timbre is very precise, the overall transparency is great, it does not conceal the details, the atmospheres are perfectly showcased and the silences are perfectly retained. It features great neutrality, underlining the advantages (and flaws) of the headphones with which it is used. Another job well done by the Austrian manufacturer! great job!’
