For a few years now, renowned French company Micromega has been exploring pastures new. The Micromega MyDac DAC has contributed to the brand’s success, with the industry press praising it as a comprehensive and well-designed product. It has to be said that very few Hi-Fi products are designed and manufactured in France, but Micromega’s output is excellent proof of a bright future for homegrown French products.
The Micromega MyDAC is a DAC (digital-to-analogue converter) with a synchronous USB input to ensure low jitter. A small switch on the rear panel allows you to select either class 1 USB (synchronous), which uses the USB 1.1 standard, and class 2 USB (asynchronous). If you're using class 1, your computer and its clock will set the intervals between the data packets transferred to the MyDAC, which can result in a less well-defined sound quality. If you’re using class 2, the MyDAC clock will control the data import, which means you will be able to play the highest sampling rates and resolutions (24bits/192kHz).
It also has an S/PDIF coaxial input and an S/PDIF Toslink optical input which can also play these resolutions. The Micromega MyDAC couldn't be simpler to use, with a thumb wheel on the front panel allowing you to switch between standby mode and the various sources. A small LED light will turn on underneath the name of the selected source once signal is detected, and will flash if signal is not detected.
The dynamism and vibrancy of thisconverter is truly astounding. It reproduces the stereo effect perfectly, and higher frequencies are precise without ever sounding harsh. The bottom end of the spectrum is also spot on, with no duplication. The Micromega MyDac DAC was designed and produced in France, and has received several well-deserved awards for its legendary performances and value for money.
